The basics

What’s The Battle all about?

The Twin Cities advertising and communications industry lacks diversity. It’s a serious challenge. And it’s a problem that won’t be solved overnight. But there’s no reason we can’t have a little fun as we work to ensure our industry better reflects society as a whole.

The local marketing community will descend on First Avenue on December 6 for a friendly battle-of-the-bands competition that will raise scholarship money for diverse students seeking a career in the advertising and communications field. The scholarship fund is part of a new collaboration between the University of Minnesota’s College of Liberal Arts, CLAgency, its student-run agency, and The BrandLab.

What if I don’t work at an agency?

This event is for everyone in the Twin Cities advertising and communications community. We welcome local agencies, freelancers, corporate marketing teams, in-house agencies, production houses and other businesses supporting this industry to take to the stage, join in the revelry and help raise scholarship money.

How will The Battle help solve the industry’s diversity issue?

All proceeds from the event will support an innovative collaboration between the University of Minnesota’s College of Liberal Arts, its student run CLAgency, and The BrandLab.

Money raised will be used to start “The Battle” Scholarship Fund at the U of M to support students from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds who wish to pursue a career in the advertising and communications field.

How much money is going to scholarships?

The more tickets and sponsorships we sell, the bigger the donation.

Where can I buy tickets?

Group ticket packages are available for purchase online through our website. General admission tickets are available for purchase online and at all First Avenue ticketing outlets.

Please inquire at info@thebattlemn.com for group ticket sales.

How do I enter a band into The Battle?

Email info@thebattlemn.com for more information about our “opener” sponsorship packages and how to get your band on the most iconic stage in the Twin Cities. We have a limited number of band slots available. Each will be awarded on a first-entry-fee received, first-served basis.

What are the band guidelines?

It doesn’t matter if you’ve got an eight-piece ensemble, a solo act or something in between. Any song, any genre, anything goes. Well, not anything. We can’t have total anarchy. Check out the band guidelines here.

Will there be a prize for winning The Battle?

Of course. We’ll be announcing a little something that will reward the winning band and all their colleagues, too. But let’s be honest. This is really about the bragging rights, right?

What about the special performances?

We’ve got a variety of Minnesota favorites taking the stage to play short sets throughout the night. Set times will be released as we get closer to December 6.

Is The Battle an annual event?

That’s the goal. Help us make the inaugural event a rousing success and we’ll bring it back.
